Introduction RLS Paddleboards

I am a local EastBay resident and avid paddleboader. I am selling a limited supply of some value priced high pressure inflatable paddleboards in the SF Bay Area. I got these to test the market and see whether I can make a go of of this as a small business distributing for an outstanding company, Saturn Inflatables. Comparable boards run $995 or more. $489 is your cost with you picking it up in Fairfield. I have 11 of these right now. Save $500 and give me a call! I can get another shipment if demand increases . These boards are awesome. I have an HOA lake near my home that I can let you take a spin to verify you want one. They are truly amazing. You can easily convert them to a one or two person sit-on-top Kayak by simply clipping kayak seats to the installed d-rings. It is really fast, heavy duty, and packs into a convenient little roll for storage. I take mine everywhere I go. I have taken it to Lake Solano, Point Reyes, Stinson's and even down the San Juan River in Southern Utah.

As an SUP enthusiast, here are some of the things to consider when deciding between hard(fiberglass) and an inflated board when getting started in the sport. I think you should have both but, would lean towards starting with inflated.

Hardsides
Pros
Can be a little faster, depending on the shape and stability you buy.
Pull it off the roof and go, no pumping.

Cons
You drop a hard side once and you may ruin it, if the wind catches it when you are loading, sadness...
You need to have a large and safe place to store it-
Have to spend a bunch of money on roof racks
Can't use it in any streams or rivers with more than a mild current because in you hit a rock you may destroy your board
If you fall on it, it hurts. :)
To get a beginner board with enough buoyancy to establish confidence you will need spend at least $800 on the board alone.

Soft Sides
Pros
More stable
Super durable, (made out of white water rafting material) rocks and reefs, dropping it not a concern, if you do manage to get a puncture, "tear-aid" fixes it in one minute.
Rivers, streams, shallow reef, shallow creek, white water SUPing, options are limitless
Rolls up in a tight little package, (carry-on-able) weighs only 22 pounds.
The buoyancy is incredible and solid, drop stitch floor creates a rigid yet forgiving platform.
If you fall on it it hurts less.
Can be converted into a one or two person sit-on-top Kayak in less than 3 minutes by clipping kayak seats on d-rigs that are already installed. ( also helpful during long paddles, if the wind picks up you can switch to seated paddling quickly and create less wind resistance).
While it is true to get a good one you usually have to spend $7, 8 or $900 on a heavy duty board, I am the first distributor on the west coast to bring these in and they blow away my competition in value and quality. The company has even reverse engineered a $350 high pressure pump in such a way that they are able to offer it for less than $125. (the new ones come with a "turbo bravo manual pump" with a psi gauge)

Cons
Can be slower depending on the shape you buy.
Have to pump up before you go, (takes 15 minutes manually, takes 3 minutes with a high pressure pump.)

Paddle Boards

Stand-Up Paddle Boarding or SUP is a new fashionable sport developed in Hawaii. It is gaining tremendous popularity among surfers who find it as an excellent way to train while the surf is down. Paddle Boarding is an increasingly popular sport activity that involves paddling and/or surfing. It is as close as you can get to "walking on water".

The standup board is relatively easy to ride and allows paddlers of all skill levels, including beginners, to enjoy a stable, comfortable ride while getting a moderate workout. Stand-Up Paddle Boarding can be done in the ocean, harbors, rivers and lakes.

However, some practice is needed, same as with bicycle or roller-skates first time use, and you can't expect to jump on this board and start doing some fancy tricks. Saturn Inflatable Paddle Board is portable and lightweight. Click on image to zoom in. Stand up paddle board video instructions can be found on YouTube.

An inflatable stand-up paddle board or iSUP can be inflated to almost 10 psi air pressure for an excellent performance on the water. In fact, it become so hard that you can carry it on top of your car as a regular paddle board. We are highly recommend a high pressure electric air pump that can inflate paddle board to full working 10 psi pressure.

Our new and upgraded RLS inflatable multi-sport iSUP boards 12' SOT365 have D-rings in the front and back for attachment of a surfboard safety leash or carry handles, and set of D-rings at edges of the board for the attachment of an optional kayak seats, to use this board as a sit-on-top surf kayak. Remove the seat - and you have a SUP paddle board or long surfboard. Install kayak seats and you have a sit-on-top kayak for 1-2 persons that is fast and easy to paddle!

RLS multifunctional sport boards are not only great as a stand up paddle board or sit-on-top surf kayak, but also excellent for long trips to remote locations on a warm day.

New, adjustable-height aluminum SUP paddles are available. RLS SUP paddles are specifically designed with travel in mind, to go along with inflatable paddle boards. SUP paddles are not only lightweight, but also brake up into 3 parts for portable storage and easy transportation.

"Just got back from my Second weekend out with my Saturn Stand up paddle Board, have to write to thank you for such a fine product! We love it. It seems very well made and performs better than I'd hoped. I had So much fun! I will be sending many folks to your site. When i am out on it Everyone wants to know where i got it! My wife loves to lay out on it as I pull her behind my Kayak! Next I will be buying the pump so I can see how many PSI its at." - Nathan F.

"I have two Saturn Paddle boards, I believe it was the SOT350 at the time. I bought it right when you first came out with the 12ft. I am a big guy, 6'4", 220 pounds, so I am right on the edge of its SUP capacity, but I still love it and have taken it everywhere. I have taken your paddle board, in swift water, down the San Juan River in Southern Utah, and to almost every beach in the SF Bay area. I have taken it down some flat water rivers too: Gualala river, Lake Solano and others. I have taken it through the straights of the San Fransisco Bay and plan to paddle into the cove next to a Giants game one of these Saturday games. So I have done a little of every thing with it. And while it does not perform quite like a hard-side, it is so versatile that it makes up for its lack of swift water prowess." - DJB.

The material and construction of our boards and boats

All RLS products are built by our manufacturer, Saturn. Our products are made of 1,100 Dtex (0.9mm) New Generation PVC fabric with polyester support, having excellent resistance to tearing, tension and breaking.

Our paddleboards inflatable boats, inflatable kayaks, kaboats, river rafts, etc are all hand-sealed at the seams for perfect seaming, the most expensive and reliable method used today. Each seam is strengthened with four layers of bonded fabric for maximum strength and durability. SATURN seams are virtually indestructible and will not fall apart, even after many years of use in any weather. All seams are quadruple overlap for better protection as shown below:

Inflatable Boats Fabric Structure.

There are currently two major methods constructing an inflatable boat: welded and glued seams. And there is a lot of misunderstanding about “glued” PVC vs. "welded". In fact, “glued” PVC is actually solvent-welded, whereas “welded” PVC is heat-welded, and both methods result in a similar fusing of the membrane. Also, “welded” PVC may be more susceptible to damage from folding than “glued” PVC. Furthermore, the four layer bonding construction used by Saturn actually provides more overlay and reinforcement of the seam than the simple overlap of welded construction of welding.

Glued seams on a PVC boat are fundamentally different than glued seams on a rubber (Hypalon/Neoprene) boat.

Hand Glued Seams Vs. Welded Seams

Glued (PVC)
Strength/Bond type: Strong -- Chemical/Molecular bond
Durability: Good -- Problems with old PVC boats falling apart have been resolved for over 10 years.

Welded (PVC/Polyurethane)
Strength/Bond type: Strong -- Molecular bond
Durability: If temperature, feed rate, and other factors are ideal: Good. -- Welding combined with folding a boat can cause microscopic fracturing of the coating resulting in the boat loosing air over time. Welded seams are not advisable with polyester base fabrics.

PVC Fabric Vs. Hypalon.

PVC
Pro: significantly less expensive than Hypalon.
Con: won't last as long in the direct sunlight as Hypalon. (if left unprotected).

Hypalon
Pro: will last significantly longer than PVC when exposed to prolonged periods of direct sunlight.
Con: significantly more expensive then PVC.
Con: looses air over time due to its structure.

There is no doubt that PVC fabric won’t last as long as Hypalon fabric if the boat is subjected to prolonged periods of direct sunlight and no measures have been taken to protect the PVC fabric from the sun (i.e. boat cover or UV spray). After a number of years in direct sunlight the PVC fabric can become sticky. After that it can also become discolored.

Here are some things to consider:

1) This is not a problem unless your boat is going to be outside and unprotected all summer, every year. If you only use the boat occasionally such as on weekends or while on vacation then it isn't a factor at all. Even if you leave your boat outside all the time the issue can be solved by putting a sun/rain cover on your boat when it isn't in use or by applying a UV protective spray periodically. If you are willing to take the necessary steps required to protect your PVC boat then you can take advantage of the significantly more attractive pricing points that we are able to offer with our PVC boats. Regular usage of boat cover will significantly improve life expectancy of your boat.

2) Hypalon inflatable boats are significantly more expensive. On average a Hypalon inflatable boat will cost you 50 to 75 percent more than a PVC inflatable boat that is comparable in size and equipment options. However, if the intended use for your boat will involve very long periods of exposure to sunshine and if you are not inclined to cover or protect the boat when it isn’t in use then perhaps the added expense associated with a Hypalon boat will make practical sense for you. If you are planning to leave your uncovered dinghy on a dock or in a water 365 days/year for several years, then Hypalon is for you.
